What a flip-flappin fantastic time we had as part of the ASSITEJ Family Fare at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Thank you to all the families that supported us by watching the show (some numerous times) and for attending the Flip Flop workshops. Our free community shows in the government hospital and local township were extra special. It was a huge success in every way!

*Winner of the Audience Favourite Award at Musho! Theatre Festival 2013* Fishy Flippers is an interactive, spontaneous and playful storytelling show, about a little boy who finds a lost penguin on his doorstep. The clowns invite the audience to explore the shores of their imagination as little boy and the lost penguin set off on an adventure in search of home, only to find it within each other. This is a story of an unusual and delightful friendship, told by two (very silly) clowns! But what happens when two clowns try to tell a story? Do they lose the plot? How do they find it again and what happens when they fall face first into it? Banana and No-idea interact and play with the audience to create a unique and playfully imaginative show every time. Duration: 50 mins. Suitable for preschool and primary school children Fishy Flippers has been performed at international festivals since 2011 and is coming to Cape Town from 5-11 April 2013. She says it's like going to clown school!" What a special week together with the Jelly Belly tribe! Just like the Montessori system, each child was empowered to direct their own experience, depending on their interests. There was a wide range of creative activities for them to choose from, such as drama, arts and crafts, music and movement. Some learnt circus skills like juggling and hula hooping. Others were fascinated by the fun and friendly permaculture, i.e. the worms who live in the worm tub and create compost and fertiliser. A very focused and creative team even created a puppet box out of recycled materials, for a puppet show which we will create in Jan. For the very energetic ones, we created a fun obstacle course around the garden using a trampoline, hula hoops, skipping ropes and juggling balls! There were group activities such as a scavenger hunt, building a fire and cooking on it, water fight, making delicious and nutritious juices and snacks, dress-up and last but NOT least, parachute games! There was also time for free play, which enabled the children to socialize and interact with new and old friends. Jelly Belly Holiday Programme will run again from 7 - 11 Jan 2013. Contact Annabel at Creative Beans for more info or to book a place for your child! Jelly Belly Holiday programme for children in Swaziland from 10-14 December 2012 and 7-11 January 2013. Space is limited! In an open space in Palmridge township, three clowns from Clowns Without Borders South Africa gathered a large crowd of children on their way home from school. Fish dazzled them with his magic tricks and juggling feats, while Nabia and I mingled in amongst them as clowns. In no time, there was over a hundred curious children circling us, pushing to be part of the action. Thinking on our feet, we decided to take a group each to disperse some of the excitable energy. It is a fine balancing act to manage and hold this kind of space and so we ended up facilitating activities such as song, dance, call and response and follow the leader. At some point I stepped aside, took off my nose and sat quietly on a bench, watching the scene unfold. However, I was not alone. A sea of smiling, open faces surrounded me. The children sat by my side, patient and loyal, even when I wasn’t doing anything. I was deeply touched by this. Looking into their eyes, I realised that a little love goes a long way. “Ah, faces of angels…” These were the words that our director Sam often greeted us with after a hospital visit.
On Monday 18th June I went to Floren Skole in Hvaler, on the southeast coast of Norway, to perform parts of my solo clown and storytelling show 'Banana' and to share the work of Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA).
This event was organised by a wonderful woman called Hilde Nelly Spydevold, a dear friend and teacher at the school. Inspired by the show, and the work of CBWSA, she invited me to share the work with the primary school children. It was a huge success and they would like to support CWBSA in the future, with difference fundraising activities. "Thanks for your work with children one day at Floren Skole. The children loved it. Clowns Without Borders South Africa is a great organisation. You give joy and fun to so many children" (Teacher, Floren Skole) Every little helps! Click here to join our Circle of Laughter by making a donation so that CWBSA may continue to bring laughter and emotional relief to where it is needed most. |
